The sewers are populated with pigs and zombie-like test subjects. The protagonists fight their way through waves of technicians and bodyguards until they reach the sewers. The party awakens a month later, finding themselves in a laboratory where they have been used as test subjects for Nekro, a performance-enhancing/recreational drug with addictive properties and many side effects (one of which is causing hallucinations). However, government forces interrupt the fight and capture the four champions. Mikhail organises a fight in which one (or more) of the four champions, Sergei, Ivan, Natasha and Boris, fight waves of tramps and a knife-wielding lunatic. The fights are organised by Mikhail, who is often at odds with Vlad, a revolutionary who believes that the government is colluding with the Bratva and that it must be overthrown. The story begins in a Gypsy camp where mixed martial arts fights are held. Mother Russia Bleeds takes place in an alternative 1986 Soviet Union. Reaching round ten in an arena stage unlocks different variants of Nekro. Arena mode is an endless mode, in which one fights increasingly harder waves of enemies until it becomes overwhelming. The campaign mode is the story mode, in which one fights through side-scrolling levels until one encounters the level's boss each level ends after its boss has been defeated. Points are awarded based on how well the player does, in addition to their move variety. ![]() Nekro can be used to heal, go berserk or inject enemies ( Rose Kennedy and Bloody Mary variants only). Players are equipped with Nekro syringes, which may be filled with the blood of convulsing corpses. One can punch, kick, grab, throw and use weapons to incapacitate enemies. Mother Russia Bleeds is a side-scrolling beat 'em up, similar to Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and Final Fight. ![]() But this festival is a vehicle for something much bigger than just this one instrument – it is about the life force of music.’ There is something about a one- instrument festival that leads to this kind of total immersion – in the cello, the players and the repertoire. ![]() ‘A festival audience is looking for, and curious about, works that they’re not familiar with,’ he says. It is, he says, a vision very much aided and abetted by the festival format. If Gehry intended to surprise and demystify classical music with his architectural design, Kirshbaum has a similar outlook for the festival he founded and has directed since its Manchester incarnation, launched almost two decades ago. It is a programme as bold and arresting as the Frank Gehry-designed Disney Hall – with its curvaceous petal-like shell and gregarious interior – and it perfectly encapsulates one of the veteran US cellist’s statements of intent: to intrigue concertgoers with the new, the much-loved and the wholly unexpected. Ralph Kirshbaum is describing the concept behind one of the centrepiece concerts at this year’s Piatigorsky International Cello Festival. ’I started with an idea for a programme that would build upwards: beginning with one of the greatest chamber works in the repertoire, Schubert’s Quintet, which has two cellos followed by Brett Dean’s Twelve Angry Men, which has twelve cellos, and finishing with 100 cellos filling the stage at the Walt Disney Concert Hall for Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras no.1 for mass cello ensemble and the world premiere of a new work by the British composer Anna Clyne, Threads & Traces.’ He received his masters and doctoral degrees from Juilliard, studying with renown cellist Zara Nelsova and writing on the playing of Emanuel Feuermann.Classics reconsidered: the Sakura cello ensemble drew on a rich heritage of repertoire at the festival ![]() Smith was admitted part-time to Arizona State University, studying mathematics, music and German, and he completed a B.A. His performances have been broadcast throughout the world including, in the US, on CBS Sunday Morning and NPR’s Performance Today and Symphonycast. Smith is the principal cellist of the Houston Symphony and a faculty member of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. ![]() As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham, Cho-Liang Lin, Lynn Harrell, Sarah Chang, Dawn Upshaw and members of the Beaux Arts Trio and the Guarneri, Emerson, Juilliard, Cleveland, and Berg quartets. His debut recording of Miklós Rózsa’s Cello Concerto with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra won widespread international critical acclaim, with Gramophone praising Smith as a “hugely eloquent, impassioned soloist,” and his recording of chamber music of Fauré with Gil Shaham was chosen by numerous critics as one of the year’s best albums. Hailed by Newsday for “extraordinary musicianship…forceful, sophisticated and entirely in the spirit of the music,” cellist Brinton Smith continues to win rave reviews for virtuosic performances with musical ideals rooted in the golden age of string playing. As Stravinsky said in that era, “Hollywood is the center of the music world!” Representing virtually every facet the musical spectrum, they included Joseph Achron, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Hans Eisler, George Gershwin, Louis Gruenberg, Bernard Hermann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Ernst Krenek, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Miklós Rózsa, Arnold Schoenberg, Max Steiner, Igor Stravinsky, Alexandre Tansman, Ernst Toch, Franz Waxman, Kurt Weill, and Erich Zeisl. Performers living in Los Angeles during this era included Jascha Heifetz, William Primrose, Gregor Piatigorsky, Artur Rubinstein, Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter, Lotte Lehmann and, for the last several summers of his life, Emanuel Feuermann (After a trio concert with Heifetz and Piatigorsky, Rubinstein once quipped, “not bad for local talent!”) The émigrés also included literary and cultural figures including Thomas and Heinrich Mann, Bertolt Brecht, Dylan Thomas, Bertrand Russell, W. Maybe it’s better for some that way, given how dated a sliver of The Black Album sounds, and how charismatic Jay’s voice is on its own. There were no surprise, Shai-esque hits in these collections, but it’s not hard to find at least one reason to experience Jay-Z a capella. ![]() Before he was staring 50 and extolling the virtues of being vulnerable, “Breathing’s a privilege” came with a palpable chill.Īmerican Gangster and The Black Album a cappella Unplugged’s bonus cut is the weary “People Talkin,” a creeping coda filled with Jay-Z’s most vivid threats. It’s back to war at the end of the album, though. Jay’s unforced personability - he jokingly calls out audience members for singing the “Hard Knock Life” hook at the wrong cue - ties the set together. That warmth swings throughout Jay and the Roots’ Unplugged performance, where the even Hov’s coldest records puff with effervescence. Instead of a soldier, Questlove found in his collaborator a mensch who was a Simpsons fan. His battle for New York supremacy against Nas required him to be egotistical and cocksure. The optics of a proudly alternative band like the Roots collaborating with a shiny suit-era survivor like Jay-Z was already weird without it happening in 2001, when Hov was knee-deep in feuds. The bonus tracks have gems, too: Anti-war, “black Brad Pitt” meets bhangra on the remix to Panjabi MC’s “Beware of the Boys,” and atop the Neptunes’ doomsday bounce on “La-La-La (Excuse Me Miss Again),” Jay-Z defiantly references the stabbing of Lance “Un” Rivera (“I’ll never make the news again, my man’ll shoot ya”) and makes a rude threat at then-Suns star Stephon Marbury’s expense. Even more tragically, The Blueprint 2’s misses do overshadow some of the finest work of Jay-Z’s career the father-son tragedy of “Meet the Parents” should never be as much of a deep cut as it is. The re-release couldn’t do much to salvage the pandering Biggie references and the haphazard rock fusions. But cutting fat can only do so much with an album that was mainly fat. If the sequel’s fatal flaw was its bloat, 2.1 - a condensed version with new bonus cuts - should’ve been the obvious corrective. Years later, Young Guru would refer to what became The Blueprint 2 as a “mistake.” If Jay wanted to be held in the same regard, the logic said he needed that overlong masterwork in his discography. And at the very least, Collision Course aged far better than Jay-Z’s other big name team-up.Īs the story goes, Jay-Z’s longtime engineer Young Guru talked Hov into doing a double album because the format was the linchpin to 2Pac and Biggie’s legacies. The set topped the Billboard 200, and while hip-hop purists wept to “Encore,” it was “Numb/Encore” that dominated MTV video blocks. Its main issue here is just as obvious: Most of the songs are already near-perfect on their own “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” does not sound better with “In the End” or vice versa.īut Collision Course objectively worked on a commercial level. ![]() The obvious example is Collision Course, a mash-up mini-album that saw an artist leaving the game on top teaming up with a nu-metal group already starting to near the end of their prime. interpolation from Murmur might’ve been more interesting). Carter Collection - which is still on DatPiff - take a look at the projects outside the big 13 that’s landed on Spotify below.Įxempting “99 Problems,” a majority of JAY-Z’s dalliances with rock are underlined by awkwardness, whether from silly public perception (Is it that surprising he likes Grizzly Bear?) or his own clumsiness (an R.E.M. What about that time he linked up with the Roots? Or that other time he toured seven cities in a day when he just came out of retirement? But even Jay-Z’s own listing, like most others, didn’t include the non-studio album projects. While understandable, there’s also always been an excuse to have these sorts of debates, whether it’s a birthday, an album’s 12th anniversary, or if Hov himself offered a ranking of his own work. The re-introduction of Hov’s has reignited debates over the ranking of Jay-Z’s discography, which album is his most underrated, and if much-maligned ’97 sophomore LP Vol. Jay-Z's Catalog Returns to Spotify on His 50th Birthday ![]() The fourth-grade class at Spring Valley Elementary School .
